Public health physician, immunogeneticist and software engineer. I use computation to answer biological and population questions — from the genetics of drug hypersensitivity to the epidemiology of a pandemic.
An unusual path
Software first, then science, then medicine — each one feeding the next.
I started writing software commercially at school. HerbiGuide, the pesticide expert system I founded in 1988, won the national CompuFarm competition and is still advising Australian farmers more than thirty years later.
That computational habit carried into research. At the Centre for Clinical Immunology and Biomedical Statistics I spent a decade applying statistics to host–pathogen genetics, publishing in Science, Nature and The Lancet, and building collaborations with Oxford, Harvard, GlaxoSmithKline and Microsoft Research. I was a named investigator on grants totalling $23.1 million, including US$9.8m from the Gates Foundation.
I then went to medical school, and moved into public health. During COVID-19 I sought a secondment to a public health unit within days of the first Delta community transmission in Sydney, and went on to build the case and contact management system the district used — work that received an award from the Chief Executive. I now practise as an advanced trainee in public health medicine.

The genetic test that changed HIV prescribing worldwide
Abacavir is an effective antiretroviral, but in a minority of patients it triggers a hypersensitivity reaction that can be fatal on re-exposure. My analysis of the Western Australian HIV cohort identified a strong association between that reaction and the HLA-B*5701 allele.
The finding was published in The Lancet in 2002 and has since been cited more than 1,380 times. Screening for HLA-B*5701 before prescribing abacavir is now standard of care internationally, and the work led on to commercial diagnostic assays and two patents.
